When Birds Attack

It is not quite as bad as a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie, but Florence residents have been noticing strange behavior from the bird population.  Specifically the crows.  People have been contacting the city to report being dive bombed by crows as they walk through areas of town and especially old town around Bay Street and Laurel near the Gazebo.  City officials say not to panic.  This is an annual occurrence for the birds as they are very protective of their young.  The city is posting signs to make residents aware.  It can be somewhat surprising and a little frightening if you are walking and suddenly feel the swoosh of  a bird on your head.  The best we can hope for is that their babies learn to fly quickly!

STEM Gets Lift From Grant

The Lane Education Foundation received a $20,000 grant from the The Oregon Community Foundation to help support the growth of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education in Lane County. The award was presented on June 8 at the Student Internship Completion Dinner,   Connected Lane County has partnered  with other entities to build high school educator capacity, create learning opportunities for students, and improve equal opportunity access to computer science for all Lane County students.  The Lane Education Foundation’s goal is to ensure every child in Lane County has opportunities for intellectual growth and success regardless of need, ability, or location.

 Great Florence Duck Race

The Florence Kiwanis Club is celebrating it’s 20th year of the Great Florence Duck Race.  It is set for July 4th at the boardwalk just off of Bay Street in Old Town.  Every year the event is used to raise money for local non-profits in the form of grants that they issue and is also used to help students fund their foray into higher education.  Local Kiwanians are selling tickets.  You can purchase your duck for a chance at 40 plus prizes.  They are also available at several local businesses in town like Roby’s Furniture and appliance, Coast Insurance, the Florence Chamber of Commerce and State Farm Insurance
