OSU Casey; Beavers Win; Emeralds Tie

OSU Coach Casey Honored

Oregon State head coach Pat Casey has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Coach of the Year.  The announcement comes just hours before the Beavers are slated to open the College World Series against Cal State Fullerton Saturday at TD Ameritrade Park.  Casey has now been named the national coach of the year by at least one publication in four different years, earning the honor in 2005, 2006 and 2007 prior to Saturday’s honor.

Beavers Pull Out a Win

Then at noon Pacific Time the Beavers took the field for their first game of the CWS.  Jake Thompson was the starting pitcher and was lit up for 5 earned runs in 3 two thirds innings throwing a total of 78 pitches in the brief appearance.  The Beavers were down 5 to 1 after 5 innings and did not get two consecutive base runners in an inning.  But that all changed in the bottom of the sixth when it all began to click for them.  Gretler, Malone, and Kwan all walked to load the bases.  A sacrifice fly by Nick Madrigal brought Gretler home and then a two base smack by Trevor Larnach brought in the remaining base runners. Then Jack Anderson got his third hit of the day to tie things up sending Larnach home.  Then in the 8th inning during a 2 out rally when Catcher Adley Rutschman drove in the winning run on his only hit on the day.

Game two for the Beavers are the hard hitting Tigers of LSU.  That game will be at 4:05 pm Pacific time today.  Pre-game on KCFM is at 3:30.

Emeralds Tie Up Series

The Emeralds started off their weekend by dropping their second straight game against the Vancouver Canadians.  Friday night the Em’s  had an early threat in the second inning but couldn’t capitalize and the Canadians swung back in the third and eventually took the game 7 – zip.  Games 3 and 4 of the 5 game series saw a fighting Emerald squad take command and even up the series.  Winning 4-2 on Saturday and 6-1 on Sunday.  This evening’s game will decide who takes the series as they meet again at 7:05pm at PK Park.
