Crabs Not Meaty Enough; City Holds Special Work Session; Job Fair in March

Crabs Still Not Ready

Oregon commercial fishermen are laying in port for now as the beginning of the Dungeness Crab season is delayed once again.  The official start of the season is usually December 1st, but the crab are not cooperating.  Part of the issue is that the crab are not yet full with meat.  The other part is that crabbers want to see the price rise to a more acceptable level.  Last year processors were paying $2.89 a pound for crab and this year it is much lower at $2.30 a pound.  In recent weeks sport crabbers have been enjoying large hauls along the Florence coastline and in the Siuslaw River.  There is a possibility that within the next week or two the season might open if the crab and the price are right.
