Athlete Of The Week: Hannah Rannow

The Sports Club, the Siuslaw News, and Coast Radio Sports congratulate Hannah Rannow as the Athlete of the Week.  Hannah ran a personal best 11:03.61 for a first place finish in the 3000 meters during last week’s Siuslaw Icebreaker.  Coach Chris Johnson says what made the victory even more amazing is that she did it in what he described as a monsoon.

Honorable Mention goes to Gabe Simington who pitched 5 and a third innings against Sutherlin last week.  The Vikings did not get the win, but Simington faced 22 batters striking out 10 and went 2 for 2 from the plate and left the mound with a 4-0 lead.

Viking Baseball

Staying with the mound, it was a lesson in basics yesterday as the Siuslaw Vikings participated in the Newport Tourney.  The Vikings double header was a tough outing for the boys as they took a two run lead into the fourth inning against Estacada.  In the bottom of the fourth Estacada put 12 runs on the board making it a 13-2 game.  Coach Shinn said it was difficult to get anything offensive going in the game.  The Vikings also met with Dallas.  It was more of the same as the hitting of the Dragons was more than the Vikings could handle.  Siuslaw gave up 16 runs in the second inning and fell to Dallas 28-3

Viking Softball

Viking Girls had a softball double header at the Battle of the Beach Softball Tournament in Newport.  They faced the Billies of Pleasant Hill in a close match.  The Billies managed to defeat the Vikings 15-12.  Game two was against Marshfield.  The Pirates defeated the Vikings 12-3.

Duck Go Down To Irish

The season ended for the Oregon Duck women last night as they met with Notre Dame.  The Ducks went into half time with a 46-40 lead, but the Fighting Irish fought back outscoring the Ducks 44-28 in the second half.  Final score 84-74.
