Siuslaw ‘Twilight’ Program Struggles

It is a program that parents, teachers and students have depended on for a decade and now with the Twilight Program at Siuslaw schools in jeopardy Program Director Lisa Utz is scrambling to make sure that the students that have taken advantage of the afterschool benefit will still have some place to go.

“Trying to shift gears for either the folks to

utilize the Boys and Girls club or whatever different afterschool scenario we can come up with.”

Utz says that program funds for the previous school year were around 100,000 dollars and without that money there is no program.  She also says that teachers and community members are working with her to come up with some solutions.

“The upside of all of this is we do come up something that is more locally controlled we won’t

have to find ourselves in this situation again.”

Utz says that one of the issues with the grant is that the availability of the grant was not posted until May of this year and that meant that there was not enough time for a contingency if the grant was not issued.

Chip Seal Continues

The City of Florence public works department is continuing the chip sealing along Rhododendron drive today.  The area from Lighthouse way to Fawn View is getting a fresh coat and traffic in the area will be limited to one lane with some delays.  The project is expected to be completed tomorrow and the weather looks as though it will cooperate.  Public works asks that unless you have business along that stretch of road it is best to avoid it until the work is completed.
