Florence City Council Meeting; Habitat Breaks Ground; Port Commissioners Meeting; Tango Comes to FEC

Florence City Council Meeting

The Florence City Council has a full docket when it meets for the first time since August 20th.  the city will be looking at amending Florence City Code as it pertains to illegal lodging and camping and declaring an emergency.  The Council will also consider establishing a code of conduct policy for public city facilities along with consideration of amending the contract for Municipal Court Judge Services with judge Richard Brissenden.  The city has also reviewed proposals for the airport seal coat and lighting improvements for the Florence Airport.  The project was re-bid after construction costs came in way over the 1.1 million dollars of FAA and matching funds available.  The city has received a proposal from Kunert Electric in the amount of $954,705 and will consider accepting the proposal Monday evening.  The meeting will begin at 5:30 pm at the Florence Event Center.

Habitat Breaks Ground

The Florence Habitat for Humanity is beginning construction today on its latest home.  The site is a vacant lot on the northwest corner of Kingwood and 7th street.  The property was leveled last spring after it was initially targeted as a burn to learn for Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.  The ceremony for the 29th home in Florence will be at noon today.  Construction is expected to take about 6 months to complete with owner occupancy slated for April 2019.  The start of new construction comes on eve of the Habitat for Humanity Beach walk which begins tomorrow morning at 9 am on the north jetty and travel to Driftwood Shores and back with refreshments and entertainment at the halfway point.

Port Commissioners Meeting

The Port of Siuslaw will hold a commissioners meeting on Wednesday September 19th at the port offices.  They will start at 6pm with a  work session to discuss crabbing off the docks and then roll into regular session at 7pm.  Both meetings are open to the public.  Port offices are located at 100 Harbor street in Old Town.

Tango Comes to FEC

The Florence Event Center is featuring the Tango of the White Gardenia an original work by Ethan Gans-Morse and Tiziana DellaRovere.  This Opera in English offers humor, emotional depth and poignant topics to the music and tango of Argentina.  The event is at 7:30 this evening tickets can be purchased at eventcenter.org
