North Bend Man Charged With Murder

A North Bend man is in custody on charges of murder, attempted murder and assault after he was seen fleeing the scene of a shooting.  54 year old Glen Frank Mason IV has his first court appearance this morning at the Coos County Circuit Courtroom.  Mason allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife, 53 year old Leslie Mason and critically wounded his daughter 28 year old Lindsay Pease.  3 young children in the home were not injured.  Neighbors confronted Mason leaving the scene and he reportedly fired upon them.  One neighbor returned fire.  Mason was later apprehended at his home on Ridge Road.  Motive for the shooting is not yet known.

Holiday Gas Prices

Up and down crude oil prices have made the thanksgiving driving season fuel prices unsteady.  Currently in Florence the price of a gallon of regular gas is down about 7 cents in the past week to $3.08 a gallon.  This is due in part to the drop in prices.  Over the past two months the price has gone from a high of $85 a bbl to a recent low of $59 a bbl.  AAA Oregon’s Marie Dodds says prices could continue to fall as the refineries wrap up their maintenance season.  She says a significant drop before thanksgiving is not likely, but travelers may experience slightly lower prices by next week.

Commercial Crabbing Postponed

The recreational Dungeness crabbing season is expected to start on December 1st, but officials with the Oregon department of Fish and Wildlife have postponed the commercial season. ODFW is sighting a low meat yield as the reason.  Testing has shown that the crab is not yet reached a level acceptable for commercial fishing.  They will continue testing and hope to open the season by December 16th.

Thanksgiving Meal for Florence

Thanksgiving is one week away and the Florence Kiwanis is once again celebrating with their annual free community wide thanksgiving meal.  The meal will be served at Elks Lodge 1858 from noon until 2 pm Thanksgiving day with all of the traditional trimmings.  Ham, Turkey, dressing, dessert and non-alcoholic beverages.  22 freshly baked turkeys will be served and anyone in the community is invited.
