City Receives Grant For Crosswalk Upgrades

The City of Florence has been granted money from the Oregon Department of Transportation as part of ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program.  ODOT announced yesterday the 24 entities that will be receiving funds.  Florence will receive $346,400 dollars to improve sidewalks and crossings for Siuslaw Elementary Students.  The funds are part of a competitive grant program and request for matching grants totaling over 15 million dollars statewide.

Work Session

The City of Florence has a planned work session on Wednesday, January 23rd .  Part of the work session will be to do a final construction walk-through of the new city hall remodel.  The city employees will begin moving into the structure later in the week or first part of the following week.  The council will also look over the city’s biennial budget and get an introductory to the different departments within the city.  The city council will also host the Mayor of Milwaukee, Oregon Mark Gamba.  The special session will be held at Driftwood Shores.

Heceta Lighthouse Marks 125th Year

The Heceta lighthouse is celebrating 125 years of operation along the Oregon coast and throughout the year will be putting on special events.  The first up will be a brunch and tour of the historic home.  The tour will include the entire house which is normally just limited to the first floor.  The first brunch will be Thursday February 7th.  on February 20th will be the first of 3 special speaker series that will include historical information about the lighthouse.  Information can be obtained by visiting hecetalighthouse.com

Merkley Drops Bombshell

Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley released a previously secret document that shows the Trump administration plotted to create a crisis at the southern border.  The document was dated December of 2017.  Merkley says the government shutdown is a result of a crisis that was deliberately created including the separation of parents and children at the border.

Free Tax Seminar

Business owners in Lane County can receive free tax information from the Lane County Assessor.  The business personal property tax workshop is slated for Thursday, January 24th at 9 am.  the one hour workshop will cover what personal property is, who is responsible for filing, how to file, what penalties there are for not filing or not filing on time.  The workshop will be in Eugene at Harris Hall 125 e. 8th street.  Lane County would like interested parties to RSVP to assessor@co.lane.or.us
