Drowsy Driving & Daylight Savings

It’s only an hour, but safety advocates say it could deeply impact driving.  The Oregon Department of Transportation issued a release regarding this Sunday’s switch to Daylight Savings Time.  ODOT says that even slight changes to sleep patterns can cause drowsy driving and can be fatal on Oregon roadways.  Officially 58 people died in Oregon from drowsy driving accidents from 2013-2017, but ODOT says the number is likely higher.  One third of American drivers have admitted to falling asleep while driving and 60 % of drivers say they have driver while drowsy.  ODOT recommends pulling over and taking a walk or a short nap if you get drowsy.  Daylight savings time begins this Sunday morning at 2 am.

Storm Damage Assessments

According to Lane County officials the damage caused by the snowstorm that hit Lane County from the coast range to the cascades is expected to add up to more than $10 million dollars in damage to public utilities, road infrastructure and more.  Public agencies affected by the storm have until March 13, to complete a preliminary damage assessment for Lane County that will then be shared Oregon Emergency Management.  Damage and interruptions were limited in Florence though travel was limited due to the closing of Highway 126.  Public agencies, including utilities, cities, school districts, water districts and other will be contacted directly by Lane County Emergency Management and provide instructions to help with damage assessment.
