Voter Registration, Bond Measure

If you plan on voting in the upcoming May 21st special election tomorrow is the deadline for registering to vote.  Along with several school, fire and ambulance board elections there is also a measure before the voters for a property tax increase to build a new courthouse.  One that west lane county commissioner, Jay Bozevich says is badly needed.

“We’re just out of space, so it’s a space issue.  Right now, with the current case load let alone 50 to 100 years from now.

Bozevich says the county is mandated by the state to provide a courthouse and thereby the state will pitch in 50 percent of the funds needed, but that still leaves a sizeable sum for the residents of lane county to provide.  That amount is about 154 million dollars which according to Bozevich equates to about $4.00 per month for the average priced home value in the county

North Jetty Proposal

The state and the county are in talks to transfer management of the north jetty park in Florence.  The register Guard reports that the state is considering turning over the park to the county for a nominal fee of $500 per year.  Annual maintenance for the park is about $23,500 which costs would likely be covered by parking fees.  There is also the issue of the road and parking area along north jetty which is in need of repair.  If management changes hands there is a possibility that there could be updated restroom facilities, primitive camping, and developed hiking trails.  If county commissioners move forward, the plan will be to hold a public meeting in Florence to discuss the details and proposed lease with Florence residents.

Rhody Volunteers

With about three weeks left until Rhody Days the Florence area Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers that can provide assistance for the Annual Rhody Parade.  Volunteers would have to be available from 9am to 1pm on Sunday May 19th.  Assistance in coordinating floats, safety and general parade organization help is needed.  Contact the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce if you are available and willing to assist.
