Suspect Arrested in Assault and Rape Case

Over the weekend police in Reedsport arrested a man they believe to be responsible for a sexual assault that took place last Sunday at Carter Lake.  On Saturday May 4th detectives arrested 63 year old Edward Owen Spalione at his residence after an investigation led them to believe that he was a person of interest in the case.  Additional evidence was collected from Spalione’s residence at the time and he was taken into custody and charged 2 counts of sexual penetration in the first degree, 2 counts of kidnapping in the first degree, 2 counts of Sexual abuse in the first detree, 2 counts of assault in the second degree and 2 counts of menacing.  Detectives are also working to determine if Spalione has any connections to other similar unsolved assaults.  Police believe that he may be involved in an assault from august of 2018.  Spalione is being held in the Douglas County Jail.

126 Construction

Highway 126 construction near Walton will have traffic limited to one lane as crews continue their work on a new passing lane.  Oregon Department of Transportation reports that delays of 20 minutes or greater may exist as crews work on extending existing culverts and build up road base on both sides of the highway.  24 hour flagging exists from now until May 10th at noon.  Work on the project is expected to continue through September.  ODOT crews are also working on a section of 126 near Fern Ridge Lake and will be repairing railing on the bridge.  ODOT says you can also expect delays in that area as traffic will be limited to one lane during the day.

School Board Meeting

The Siuslaw school board will plan to finalize their budget at this week’s meeting.  The Board will meet Wednesday at 6:30 pm at the district offices on Oak Street.  Work also continues on the policy revisions and updates and a revised 2019-2020 student calendar.

Postal Food Drive

This Saturday postal carriers in Florence will hope to collect several tons of food for their annual food drive.  The USPS is collecting non-perishable items for the Florence food share and residents can participate by placing items in bags near their mailboxes.  In the past carriers have collected as much as 9000 pounds for their one day drive.

Facebook Live- CROW Auction

This Wednesday at 7 pm CROW will be experimenting with a Facebook Live Auction.  Participants can bid on different items including VIP Soar and Sip tickets and a stay-cation that includes a $75 dinner certificate to the Waterfront Depot and a one night stay at the River house inn.  The auction will be located at facebook.com/crowtheaterkids.
