Applebee Signals Retirement

After 11 years with the Oregon Coast Military Museum and 3 years as its executive director Cal Applebee has announced that he will retire effective June 30th.  Applebee says it is time to relax a bit and do some traveling with his wife.  His departure as the museum’s Executive Director will not mean he is walking away from the non-profit.  Applebee will serve as Chair/coordinator of the Motorpool group.  On July 6th the museum will celebrate its 4th anniversary.  Applebee says while he has enjoyed his time with the museum, it has been a lot of work to keep money coming in to operate.  The Board is currently working on a transitional process to choose its next leader.  Board president, Tim Sapp, praised applebee for his work ethic, enthusiasm, and his focus on the mission.

Gas Down for Holiday

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, the price of a gallon of regular gas has come down in Florence.  Many local outlets in Florence dropped their prices yesterday by as much as 8 cents per gallon.  The spring refinery maintenance has just about wrapped up around the west coast and supplies are steady.  Drivers will hit the road this weekend with over a half million Oregon residents planning to travel.  Prices are expected to dip slightly over the next several weeks.

Crash Investigation

Oregon State Police are investigating an accident on Highway 101.  Late Tuesday evening a ford pickup was traveling near milepost 223, near Lakeside when for unknown reasons it left the roadway and overturned.  60 year old Joey Vandenhey of Lakeside was pronounced dead at the scene.  No other vehicles were involved and Vandenhey was alone in the vehicle.  Coos County Sheriffs assisted OSP in their response.
