City Council Meeting

The Florence City Council last night approved the extension of the waivers and deferrals for system development charges on new properties.  The waiver that covers the building of Accessory Dwelling Units within the city limits was not affected by that extension since it is an ongoing deferral.  The city also approved the closure of Bay Street from Laurel Street to the Siuslaw River Bridge for next month’s Block Party scheduled for July 19th.  and the City approved a liquor License for Bodega which will be located in the building that was formerly Alissa Clark Clayworks on 180 Laurel Street. And a liquor license for Off Bay Street Bistro which will be located in the former Maple Street Grille location.  The City Council also approved the extension of the Tourism and Marketing contract with the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce.  During the public comment portion of the meeting several citizens raised concerns about estate sales in gated communities that they say are causing traffic problems and other concerns.

Safe Boating

As the summer season approaches the U.S. Coast guard is reminding boaters about proper etiquette on the waters.  Recently at the Port of Siuslaw new notices were posted regarding wake zones and the fines associated with them.  Speed limits have been replaced with wake warnings to remind boaters that damage caused to moored boats or docks is the responsibility of the boater.  Fines of $260.00 dollars are also associated with creating a wake too close to the docks.  According to Port management Oregon State Police and U.S. Coast guard patrols will be on the increase this season to issue fines and regulate boaters.  The U.S. Coast Guard also reminds boaters that the responsibility of operating a safe boat with properly working equipment and the correct amount of life jackets lies on the boats licensed operator.  The consumption of alcohol or drugs while boating is illegal and also one of the main causes of boating accidents.

Community Meeting

There will be a community meeting on June 24th at Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue.  The purpose of the meeting is so the Lane County Board of Commissioners can receive input on the possibility of taking over management of the North Jetty Park in Florence.  The county is considering a long term lease with the Oregon Department of State Lands.  The goal for taking charge of the park is to provide improved maintenance and have a more regular park ranger presence.  The meeting will be from 6-7:30 pm at the main fire station on highway 101.

School Board Meeting

The Siuslaw School Board will meet in executive session prior to their monthly meeting tomorrow.  The session is to consider the dismissal of disciplining or to hear complaints or charges brought against a public officer, employee, staff member or agent unless he or she requests an open meeting.  The executive session is closed to the public.  The board will open the meeting after the executive session for regular business.  On the agenda, Bob Teter with Siuslaw Outreach Services will give a presentation on cyberbullying and sexting as it pertains to middle school students.  They will also have an open Budget hearing with a proposal to adopt the 2019/2020 budget.
