Safe Speeds On The Water

According to local anglers the summer fishing season has been good.  Many boats are reaching their limits within the first hour and returning.  The increase in boats coming and going from the docks has been of concern and new reminders have been posted by the Port regarding wakes and speeds.  The Oregon State Marine Board imposes rules on speeds and wakes and has limited wakes to a minimum of 300 feet from docks and moorings that have a capacity of 6 or more moored vessels or six or more contiguous structures.  It also prohibits wakes from areas where workers might be present.  Increased patrols along the port docks will be in effect as the season moves ahead.  Beginning August 1st is the traditional start for Chinook salmon fishing on the Siuslaw River.  This year the limit is one adult Chinook daily for a total of 5 during the period from August 1st through December 31st.

Gas Prices Continue Downward

It may be summer, but gas prices are on a downward trend.  It is the first time in four weeks that the national average of a price of regular gas has decreased, while Oregon has seen consistent decreases.  Week over week the average price of regular gas in Oregon has decreased by a penny a week.  This week the decrease overall was three cents while prices of regular gas in Florence range from $2.80 a gallon to $2.87.  Florence remains one of the cheapest towns to purchase gas in Oregon despite the remote location.  Oregon prices have dropped 7 cents in the last month and are lower than a year ago according to AAA Oregon.

FURA Meeting Votes New Chair Tonight

This evening’s Florence Urban Renewal Agency Meeting will decide who chairs the agency for the next year.  Recent turmoil regarding funding for the Public Arts Committee has caused some dissention in the ranks.  FURA by-laws require the election of chair and vice chair positions annually at the first meeting following July 1st. This evening’s meeting will be held in the council chambers of city hall at 5:30.
