Athlete of the Week: Braydon Thornton

The Sports Club, the Siuslaw News and Coast Radio Sports congratulate Siuslaw Viking basketball player Braydon Thornton as this week’s Athlete of the Week.  Thornton averaged 17 points per game last week capping the week with a 25 point game in the Viking’s win against Samuel Robertson on Saturday.

Honorable mention goes to Mapleton Sailor Justyce Wierichs who scored 20 points in the Sailors win against Douglas on Friday.

Mapleton Basketball

The Mapleton Sailors are on the hardwood for the open of the Mountain West League Basketball season.  The Sailor Girls will play the Eagle Girls in Eddyville in game one of the evening at 5:30, the boys game tips off at 7 o’clock.  Mapleton’s Thursday schedule against Triangle Lake will be free of charge for all attendees.  The Mapleton girls gets underway at 5:30 and the boys follow at 7:30.  There is also a middle school boys game versus McKenzie at 4pm.

Meet Cancelled

The Coast Classic wrestling meet scheduled for today has been postponed.  Coach Neil Wartnik says they are looking to reschedule the event and notification will be given when available.

Duck Women Thrash UC Riverside

Oregon’s freshman phenom, Jaz Shelley lit up the court last night firing 10 shots from outside the mark.  Shelley added 2 more from the free throw line for a 32 point night.  Sabrina Ionescu contributed with her 20th triple/double with 16 points, 18 rebounds and 12 assists in the 84-41 drubbing of UC Riverside.
