City Council Meeting

The City of Florence is back to business in the new year with their first council meeting of 2020.  The meeting will start with a proclamation naming Florence as the World Sandboarding Capital.  Florence is the location of the first sandboard park, Sand Master Park which was established in 2000.  The sport has grown to worldwide appeal and has become a competitive sport.  The city council has several other items on the agenda.  The city is considering applying for a grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to create a memorial gateway at the Florence Municipal Airport.  The project is proposed to cost $175,000 and would include a stone monument, pathways, a contoured sand beach, flagpole, and stepped amphitheater style seating.  The grant for the project would be $75,000 from the OPRD with a corresponding local match of $100,000.  $50,000 of that amount has already been donated for the project.  The city is also considering the sale of another lot in the Pacific View Business Park.  City Council meets at 5:30 Monday evening at City Hall

Rhody Theme Chosen

The theme for the 113th annual Rhododendron Festival will be “A Blast From the Past”  the title and theme suggests that there may even be some reference to the 50th anniversary of the exploding whale.  The chance for local residents to capitalize from this announcement comes in the form of designing the logo for the event.  design submissions will be accepted until January 19th and rules are available at the chamber’s website or at the chamber’s visitor center.  There is a $250.00 cash prize along with passes to the annual carnival.

Crab Crack

The annual Crab Crack to benefit the Florence Food Share will be held at the Florence Events Center on February 1st from 4-7 pm.  There will be a special auction which will include brewery and golf packages and tickets to the Ashland Shakespeare festival.  New additions this year is a to go box option for $25.00 which includes a full meal of one whole crab, pasta, coleslaw, garlic bread and dessert.  Tickets are still available for this event for $45.00 and can be purchased at the Florence Food Share at 2190 Spruce Street.
