Mapleton School Closed

Mapleton Schools will be closed today due to a water main leak.  School Superintendent Jodi O’mara says she hope the problem can be fixed in time to resume classes on Thursday.

“All after school activities will be cancelled, there is also no preschool, coaches will be contacting athletes if there is practice, but practice is not mandatory.”

The extent of the damage to the water line is not known, but O’mara was optimistic that this will be a short term problem.

Gas Prices

Gas prices continue on the decline amid record high stockpiles.  The reserve is putting downward pressure on pump prices and we are feeling the positive effects here in Florence.  Over the past week prices have come down a nickel to $2.79 for a gallon of regular gas.  Around the state the average price has dipped 2 cents and nationwide gas prices are down 4 cents to $2.51 a gallon.  These are the lowest price per gallon since March of last year.  According to Marie Dodds of AAA Oregon, the increased reserve is a normal occurrence at this time of year, but it is unusually high at 260 million barrels.

Game of Life

The Florence Kiwanis Club will be holding its third annual Game of Life event for 8th graders at Siuslaw Middle school.  The event is an opportunity to teach lessons about life, finances, and career choices.  Students can learn about balancing a checkbook, how certain career choices can provide good results, and how personal financial choices can be good or bad.  The Event will be on March 18th.  there is also an opportunity for volunteers in areas of insurance, finance, and education to volunteer.  Members of local institutions will be providing their expertise for this event.

101 North of Newport Slide

It probably will not affect most Florence residents, but the Oregon Department of Transportation has issued a rough road alert along highway 101 north of Newport.  There has been some slide movement due to the recent rains that have affected the roadway between milepost 133-136 and crews will be out over the next several days working on repairs.  If you are traveling north on 101 you can expect 20 minute delays on that section of road.
