Athlete of the Week
The Sports Club, the Siuslaw News and coast Radio sports congratulate Viking junior wrestler Christian Newlan as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Christian became the 4A special District Champion in the 220 pound weight class by defeating a pair of Sweet Home opponents and one Philomath opponent. He will represent Siuslaw High School in the State Championships.
Honorable mention goes to Justyce Wierichs who’s 29 points against Crow on Saturday secured Mapleton’s 3rd seed in the state basketball playoffs.
Ionescu’s Epic Day
Sabrina Ionescu began Monday with an emotional speech to a crowd at the staple center in Los Angeles and spoke about her friendship with former Laker star Kobe Bryant. And then she led the Oregon Ducks to Victory over Stanford with yet another epic performance. Ionescu scored her 26th triple double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the 74-66 win. It also sealed the #3 Ducks 3rd straight PAC-12 Championship. Satou Sabally added 27 points and 9 rebounds. The Ducks next face Washington State on Friday.
