City Council Meeting Scheduled

The Florence city Council will convene on Monday evening at 5:30 on the agenda is a proposal to approve a resolution that will allow the city of Florence’s public safety department to apply for a COPS Grant.  COPS or Community Oriented Policing Service helps communities with monies to provide school resource officers.  The City of Florence and the Siuslaw School District partner together to provide a School Resource Officer for the District.  The grant will cover up to a total of three years of expenses, but that the city will have to commit to a fourth year without grant funding.  The plan is for the city and the school district to supply the fourth year finances.  The City will also recognize the week of March 8th through the 14th as NO MORE WEEK to bring awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault.  Statistics show that 1 in every 3 women experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

PeaceHealth Integrates Holistic Practice

PeaceHealth has announced that they have graduated their first group of caregivers earning certifications in health coaching.  The hospital system is embracing the combination of Allopathic and Holistic care by embracing preventative care techniques in the form of health coaching.  The hospital has provided scholarships to two entities in Florence: Western Lane Ambulance and Florence Food Share.  The certifications are earned through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  There were 22 participants that completed the program in Oregon out of 77 total graduates.  Peace Harbor graduated medical assistant Sara Mann.

Education Expo

Tomorrow Siuslaw School district will host its first ever Education Expo.  The expo is designed to represent a wide variety of educational and community involvement opportunities for people of all ages.  Groups like the Power of Florence, Lane County Health and Human Services and Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue outline the diversity in opportunities available.  From volunteering to paid jobs the expo offers all ages a chance to get involved.  The event is from 10 until 2 tomorrow and will be at Siuslaw High School on Oak Street.  There will be entertainment and refreshments.
