Florence Events Center Celebration Cancelled

The Florence Events Center 25th anniversary celebration is the latest event to fall prey to the skyrocketing numbers of COVID-19.  Assistant City Manager Megan Messmer released the notice of cancellation yesterday.  Tomorrow night’s event marked the 25 years the center has been open to the public, but Lane County advisories on events is not recommending gatherings of individuals due to the rate of infectious spread of the Delta Variant.  Messmer said that since food and supplies have already been purchased they are working with ways to share them with the community.  She says that while the cancellation is disappointing the decision is in the best interest for the health and safety of the community.

OHA Reports High COVID-19 Numbers

Weekend numbers from the Oregon health Authority were released yesterday afternoon and there were 4,701 new confirmed and presumptive cases.  There were also 24 deaths reported as cases continue to mount.  Lane County had 659 reported cases over the same period.  The Florence area has reported 34 cases and has not surpassed the 400 mark with 426 known cases to date.  The positive test cases are spread out through the community touching school athletics, businesses and small gatherings, mainly affecting the unvaccinated population.  Lane County Public Health’s Jason Davis continues to spread the word through the Florence Community with public service announcements on the importance of getting vaccinated.  Saturday’s vaccination Clinic at Siuslaw Middle School had 67 individuals that received either a first dose or a secondary dose of the Pfizer vaccine or the solitary Johnson and Johnson according to Nancy Berge of Arc of Lane County.

Beds Filling Up

The number of available hospital beds continues to shrink as more COVID-19 patients are admitted.  The number of COVID-19 patients is nearing the 1,000 mark and is currently at 937 with 37 more individuals admitted over the weekend.  The number of Intensive Care patients is also climbing with 253 individuals currently housed in ICU’s.
