City Council Meeting; Bridge Work; Council to Consider Grant; More COVID-19 for Florence Area; Scam Alert

City Council Meeting

The Florence City Council is slated to meet this evening.  The virtual meeting will take place over gotowebinar.  The city will consider the transfer of jurisdiction of a portion of Rhododendron drive as well as a section of 4th avenue.  Recent annexations of property along the roadway has prompted the city to consider taking over the maintenance.  The section of roadway under consideration is Rhododendron drive from  Sebastian Street to Heceta Beach Road and a portion of 4th avenue from Heceta Beach road/Kiwanda street to the current city limits.  Lane County Public Works is supportive of the transfer to City responsibility.  The City will also consider the purchase of a new utility vehicle for the Florence Police Department.  The gas electric hybrid 2022 Ford Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid vehicle.  The city intends to purchase the vehicle locally through Johnston Motor Company.  The purchase will come under budget by approximately $5,006.00.  The vehicle will arrive 10 to 12 weeks after purchase to be fitted with appropriate police accessories.

Bridge Work

The Oregon Department of transportation will begin replacing the deck of the Siuslaw River Bridge today.  Construction is expected to take place until October 29th with one lane of the bridge closed down at a time.  Crews will be installing scaffolding for the first part of the project and that will take place until approximately October 11th.  Most of the work will take place during daylight hours.

Council to Consider Grant

The city of Florence in their meeting this evening will also consider  a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to improve the tennis courts and to expand to include the addition of pickleball courts.  The grant application will request $40,000.  The city match will come in the form of staff time and other smaller improvements made at the park.

More COVID-19 for Florence Area

New numbers for the 97439 zip code are due out today to add to the increasing number of cases in the community.  On Friday the county added 16 cases to the 97439 area to bring the total to 623 all time for the Florence area.  The Oregon Health Authority reported 2,099 cases on Friday and Lane County reported 176 cases.  Overall cases are beginning to see slight drops week over week and hospitalizations and deaths are also decreasing.  The current percentage of new cases in vaccinated individuals is 17.8 percent with the majority of new cases being attributed to unvaccinated individuals.

Scam Alert

The Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum has issued a release about potential Job Scams in Oregon.  The jobs are targeting individuals that are applying for jobs at the Oregon Department of Justice and are being solicited through sites like Linkedin.  The embedded links appear as legitimate postings and are then used to harvest information to be sold to a third party.  Rosenblum suggests that you contact the company to ensure that the post is legitimate before submitting any information through the internet.
