Vikings Are State Champions

On Saturday the Siuslaw Vikings took the field against the South Umpqua Lancers in what would be the first of three Championship football games.  The Vikings scored first in the game with a 24 yard pass from Beau Erickson to Braydon Thornton. And followed it up with a  two yard run by Thornton to take an 8-0 lead.  South Umpqua soon answered with a field goal as the Viking defense held tough to keep the Lancers out of the end zone.  By early in the fourth quarter the Lancers had taken the lead 9-8 on their third field goal of the day, and Siuslaw answered with a 10 play 74 yard drive.  Erickson found Thornton twice on the drive with a 30 and 25 yard completion.  With a yard to go Camp Lacouture drove through the Lancer defense for the go ahead touchdown.  With just under 5 minutes to go south Umpqua drove down the field but after a failed attempt to get a first down they decided to go for it on fourth down.  Bob Sneddon with the call:

Braydon Thornton suffered a rib injury on that play but walked off the field on his own.  Coach Sam Johnson said that play won the game for the Vikings.  Here is Johnson after the game.

The Vikings controlled the ball for the final 3:50. A pair of first downs allowed them to run out the clock final score 14-9.

Late Rally Not Enough for Beavers

The rivalry game was also on Saturday with Jonathan Smith bringing the Beavers into Autzen Stadium for what many hoped would be an epic battle.  The Ducks took a 24-3 lead into half time as the beavers offense had a difficult time getting started but came out in the second half and scored first with a 4:27 second drive with 9 plays for 64 yards to score a touchdown but missed on the 2 point conversion but Oregon would come right back with a 10 play 85 yard touchdown that would eat up just over 6 minutes on the clock.  The Beavers would score 2 more touchdowns but the ducks added another of their own to control the game and finish on top 38-29.  The Ducks will now head to Las Vegas for the Pac-12 Championship game and have another shot at Utah.  The Ducks will try to regain some respect after the 38-7 drubbing handed to them on November 20th by the utes.  The game will begin on KCST this Friday at 3:30 with a 5pm kickoff.

OSU Takes Wake Forest to OT
