Community Foundation Doles Out Grants

Western Lane Community Foundation released the recipients for its 2021/2022 grant cycle.  WLCF President Sandy Kuhlman announced that 21 non-profit organizations will receive more than $64,500 in grants.  Several organizations received grants of $5000 including Nurturely a perinatal program in Eugene that supports infants and caregivers.  The grant will help Nuturely provide services for western Lane County.  Some other recipients were the Siuslaw Lions Club which uses the monies to provide eye exams and glasses for those in need.  First Step Florence  will receive $5,000 to weatherize trailers that provide transitional housing for Florence.  WLCF also provided Project Graduation a $3,500 grant for a safe and fun Grad night for the class of 2022.  WLCF if a community trust with assests over 12 million dollars, founded in 1974.

COVID Update

Lane County posted 33 new COVID-19 cases yesterday and none for the 97439 zip code (1505).  The daily average of cases is at 26 and the case per 100,000 rate has dropped to 47.2 for a 7 day average.  hospital rates have dropped in Lane County with 21 patients still occupying beds.  The Oregon Health Authority reported 301 cases statewide and four fewer beds for COVID patients – the number now sits at 161.  The OHA is also reporting that almost 38% of cases this past week were breakthrough cases, or cases that crossed over to vaccinated individuals.  More than half of the 750 cases were in individuals that were fully vaccinated.

Lighthouse Birthday

Next week on March 30th the Heceta Lighthouse will be celebrating its 128th birthday with a celebration from 4-7 pm.  The event will have live music and free hot dogs.  There is a $5 dollar parking fee.  The event also kicks off the lighthouse’s summer raffle with prizes from area businesses including Sea Lion Caves.

Show and Shine

Rhododendron Festival will be back and one of the annual events that is pleasing for contributors as well as spectators is the Rhody Days Show and Shine.  The show will have a new location this year as it moves off of Highway 101 to the Siuslaw Middle School.  the event annually draws about 200 classic vehicles from custom rods to British cars and Jeeps.  There will be music all day and food available.  The Pinewood Derby will also take place at the event.

Call for Artists

C.R.O.W. along with the Florence Events Center, the Florence Arts, Culture and Entertainment and BeauxArts Fine Arts Materials and Gallery have announced a “call for Artists” to participate in a “blizzard of local talent.” It coincides with the opening of Frozen Jr. performed by C.R.O.W.  all levels of artistic talent are encouraged to contribute.  Deadline is April 19th.
