Wildfire Mitigation Plans

Recently filed wildfire mitigation plans outline the steps public utilities will take in the event of a wildfire.  Every region across the state including the one serviced by Central Lincoln PUD delivered detailed plans to the Oregon Public utility Commission on June 30th.  PUC commissioner Letha Tawney says the plans “demonstrate a great deal of work to meet the needs of communities and keep pace with the changing wildfire risks”  the plans include public safety power shutoffs should the need arise.  Tawny says as we begin the last week of June temperatures are expected to be higher than normal.  And public utilities need to be prepared.  As is customary with any emergency plan Tawny says being ready with two week’s supplies is essential.  While being prepared is important, Chris Chandler with Central Lincoln PUD says , “the state of Oregon Department of Forestry reports that the Central Coast is at low risk of wildfire..  Dangers that do exist along the coast mainly come from strong winds and falling trees.

Scams on the Rise

Digital scams are on the rise and it’s getting to be more difficult than ever to know if an email, a text message, a website or even a phone call is legitimate.  According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center 92-thousand victims over the age of 60 reported losing 1.7-billion dollars to scams in 2021.  You can do some things to help prevent becoming a victim.   Watch out for obvious misspellings or grammatical errors.  Urgency or a demand for immediate action is a good sign too.  If someone purporting to with a business you regularly do business with is asking for personal information, they’re likely not who they claim to be.  You can also check the email address.  If it’s legitimate then it will show the commercial name and won’t be from a gmail or other account.  Finally, consider strengthening your security by regularly changing your online passwords or use a two-factor authentication; or talk to someone you know and trust about updating or installing a stiffer software security plan.
