Weather Statements; Paid Leave Beginning; End of Year Giving

Weather Statements

The National weather service has issued a coastal flood watch for the Florence area as well as parts north for the next 24 hours. Along with the watch there is also the potential for sneaker waves along the coast line which are particularly dangerous for pets and children, but have also been known to sweep away adults. It is also especially dangerous when debris might be included in the ocean currents that can wash ashore and overtake individuals. In addition to the coastal flood watch there is also an ongoing high wind watch posted. That is expected to subside mid day tomorrow. Winds are expected to be in the 25 -35 miles per hour range with the potential for gusts up to 65 miles per hour. This can impact high profile vehicles such as RVs or tractor trailers. It could also come with power outages. The strongest of winds are expected this evening into Tuesday morning.

Paid Leave Beginning

Oregon is joining the ranks of states that provide paid leave for all workers. In January, employees and employers will begin paying into the program. Workers will be able to apply for benefits in September. Paid Leave Oregon director Karen Humelbaugh says the program is important for the safety and welfare of communities.

“Some of us have had paid leave through our employer, but many Oregonians do not have any form of paid leave. So this helps to create this level playing field and vital safety net for all Oregonians who are working.”

Paid leave of up to 12 weeks a year will be available in three situations. The first is family leave so that people can take care of a family member, or newborn or adopted child. The second is medical leave for someone’s own health. And the third is safe leave for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment or stalking.

End of Year Giving

The end of the year for many signifies a focus on how much money they made and how that will affect their taxes. It happens to coincide with non-profits push for end of year giving. Michelle Diffenderfer is the interim director for the PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center Foundation says it is an important time for both the non-profit and the giver.

“if you are an itemizer, which many of us are, this is very beneficial you can write off all donations on your taxes.”
She says all donations for the foundation are used specifically for projects and do not go to fund administrative costs.

“Every dollar that is given to Peace Harbor stays in Florence it benefits caregivers as far as furthering education; it helps us remodel buildings; it helps us buy new equipment.”
This is the final week to give to non-profits for the 2022 tax year. There are many local non-profits that can benefit from you giving such as the Florence Food Share and Siuslaw Outreach Services. Now is the time to reach out to your favorite non-profit and give.
