Lane Community College

This evening’s Ribbon Cutting at the Lane Community College Florence Campus will officially mark the return of fill time classes at the center.  A period of pandemic and reconstruction has held off the return of students to the center.  The college’s dean, Russ Pierson says it wont be just about reopening the campus.

“I think there’s five students that are getting scholarships directly from the LCC Foundation and there are three students that will be receiving scholarships from the Rotary Club of Florence.”

The school will also be introducing the Florence community to their new President, Dr. Stephanie Bulger.  The event at the campus at 3149 Oak Street will begin at 5 pm and last until 7pm.  Mayor Rob Ward will also speak Briefly.  After the ribbon Cutting there will be a tour of the facility.

A local photographer teamed up with the Siuslaw School District to take photos at last Friday’s high school commencement.  Michele Bunch took dozens and dozens of photos before, during and after the ceremony.  The gallery of photos is online and available for free download at siuslawhs-dot-smugmug-dot-dom.  Bunch has photo galleries on that site going back to the 2014 graduation.

Flag Ceremony

Many people fly the American Flag as a way of proclaiming their patriotism.  But, according to American Legion Post #59 Commander Mike Neilson, if that flag is not pristine:

“It’s dishonorable to fly a tattered flag.  Once they’re not in pristine condition they should be retired… not paying the proper respect.”

The American Legion post will hold a retirement ceremony Wednesday afternoon near Veteran’s Memorial Park.  Anyone who has a soiled or worn flag can bring it beginning at two PM that day.

“Retire the flag with honor, with dignity rather than keepin’ it folded up in your garage someplace or in the back of your car or wherever you keep it.  This way it can be retired with honor and it’s done its duty and we thank it for that.”

The ceremony is open to all.  It begins at four PM tomorrow.

Shore Acres Reservations

It is not really time to be thinking about Christmas, but if you are someone who likes to plan ahead, Shore Acres State Park has opened up its reservation system for the Holiday Lights event at the park.  The holiday lights can be viewed from November 23rd until December 31st.  Lee Ricci, park manager says the system that they put in place last year received overwhelming positive feedback.  It streamlined the process and made entry quicker and easier for attendees.  You can make your reservations at stateparks.oregon.gov

East Oregon Road Closure

If you are planning a trip to the eastern part of the state this weekend it may be important to know that highway 20 between Burns and Vale is shut down after about 15,000 cubic yard of rock, mud and debris covered the roadway.  Multiple slides between the milepost 201 and 202.  The slide caused a 34 mile stretch of the highway to be shut down while crews remove the material. In addition to some pile of more than 15 feet in height there are also power lines that have been toppled.
