Newport High Schooler Dies After Soccer Practice; Ems Get a Win Against League Leading Canadians

Newport High Schooler Dies After Soccer Practice

Sad news out of the Newport community, a Newport High School Student athlete has died after participating in an afternoon soccer practice on Monday.  Yael Felix-Trejo died after falling ill on the field.   Monday was the first day for fall practices for Oregon High School and it was also the hottest day of the year.  Coastal temperatures were way below the 100 plus degrees felt in the valley and it is not clear if the heat was the reason for the boy’s death.  Siuslaw Soccer is not scheduled to play Newport, but Viking football will have its first game of the season on September 1st against Newport High School.

Ems Get a Win Against League Leading Canadians

After cancelling their first scheduled game on Tuesday the Eugene Emeralds were back on the field at PK Park last night to face the league leading Vancouver Canadians.  The Ems struck first with 4 runs in the first inning including a 3 run homer by Luis Toribio.  The Ems would add four more to take an 8-0 lead.  The Canadians didn’t give up and mounted a comeback with 2 runs in the 6th, one in the seventh and a 3 run homer in the 9th, but the Ems shut it down for the win 8-6.  Play resumes this evening at PK Park.
