The Three Buttes fire 11 miles northeast of Florence is still burning, but fire officials fromt the US Forest Service says that firefighters are having success containing the lightning caused fire.  The size if the area has reduced to 117 acres from 144 and the fire is considered 26% contained as of yesterday evening.  Personnel have been able to walk most of the perimeter of the fire in order to map the area and where it was not safe for them to do so it was observed by helicopter.  A small area southeast of forest Road 712 and 673 still needs work on the indirect fireline and firefighters continue to secure the area around the Herman Peak Communications site.  There are currently 88 fire personnel assigned to the blaze and there are still 13 pieces of heavy equipment working on suppression.  Several roads remain either partially or fully closed.  Upper North Fork Siuslaw Road is open for traffic.

99 Year Old Veteran

A milestone birthday is coming up for a World War II vet this weekend.

“His name is Jack Dodson.”

Cindy Porter says Dodson doesn’t have any family here in Florence.

“He was in our office yesterday and he’s all by himself and I just, I thought, you know, he’s just too important of a  person to be missing such an important birthday.”

The former Army Air Corps Lieutenant Colonel saw plenty of action in the Pacific Theater according to Porter, who adds that he has served our country well.

“He’s somebody that needs to be recognized for sure and I just thought that this is a sad thing if he’s not going to be recognized on his 99th birthday.”

That’s right, 99 years old Saturday.  If you’d like to drop off a birthday card or just a note thanking him for his service or just telling him that you’re thinking about him, leave it at the front office of Shorewood Senior Living at 15th and Spruce.
