Hotel Update

The proposed Wyndham Microtel hotel on Quince Street in Florence is moving closer to reality. Developer Matt Braun of Braun Hospitality is expected to provide a progress update at this Wednesday’s Florence Urban Renewal Agency meeting. Braun recently said they’ve secured $2.33 million from nine investors and are halfway to their $4.75 million goal. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer, While City officials have said that Braun is pulling building permits and assembling financing,  Rising construction costs and economic uncertainty have caused delays. Braun has said he remains committed, citing strong community value and a personal stake in the project. FURA will know more tomorrow when they meet at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Labor and Delivery Woes

A new report from Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families finds Oregon is among the top ten states with the highest share of rural women of childbearing age on Medicaid—more than 31 percent. Labor and Delivery Nurse Stephanie McDougal with Samaritan Health in Lebanon says proposed closures of birthing centers in Lebanon and Lincoln City would be devastating.

“To go to the next hospital would be near impossible for them. And that’s outside of talking about life and death. Minutes matter when it comes to emergencies.”

The closures stem from financial struggles at rural hospitals, tied in part to low Medicaid reimbursements. Meanwhile, Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence is expanding Labor and Delivery services, providing critical care access on the coast.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Florence residents can safely dispose of household hazardous waste without driving to Eugene. Lane County will host a drop-off event at 2820 North Rhododendron Drive on Friday, June 6 from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday, June 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items like paints, cleaners, batteries, and garden chemicals will be accepted—up to 35 gallons per household. Improper disposal can contaminate groundwater, harm wildlife, and pollute streams and coastal waters. Materials must be in labeled containers. For details, call 541-682-4120.
