City Tsunami Awareness Event
The City of Florence and Lane County Emergency Management are teaming up with state and federal agencies to host a Tsunami 101 Community Roadshow on Monday, June 9th, at the Florence Events Center. The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. and will feature expert presentations from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management, DOGAMI, and the National Weather Service on earthquake and tsunami preparedness, alert systems, and what residents can do now to stay safe. Earlier that day, OEM will also host a Be 2 Weeks Ready train-the-trainer session from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. also at the Florence Event Center.
Heceta Beach Monitoring
Heceta Beach in Florence is among the sites being monitored for bacteria this summer by the Oregon Beach Monitoring Program. The monitoring season runs from mid-May through mid-September and includes beaches with past water quality concerns or high public use. If bacteria levels exceed safe thresholds, advisories will be issued. The program aims to protect public health by sampling frequently visited coastal recreation areas and adjusting monitoring based on changing environmental conditions and public input.
Money for Affordable Housing Granted
Oregon Housing and Community Services and BuildUp Oregon have awarded $1.43 million to a Florence project that will combine early childhood education with affordable housing. The “Our Coastal Village” development will feature 32 two- and three-bedroom units and a new learning center, including four classrooms operated by Stepping Stones and Head Start of Lane County. It’s part of a $7.4 million statewide initiative to expand access to both housing and child care—two critical needs in communities like Florence.
