Fatal Crash
Oregon State Police say a Florence man was involved in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday that left two people dead and several others injured. Investigators say a Kia Optima crossed the centerline on Highway 101 near Coos Bay and sideswiped a southbound Toyota Corolla driven by 61-year-old Kent McQuillen of Florence, before striking two other vehicles head-on. The Kia’s driver and a passenger, both from Coos Bay, were pronounced dead at the scene. McQuillen was not injured. The crash closed the highway for about four hours during the investigation.
Fire Restrictions
Stage I fire restrictions took effect on Friday, July 4, across the Siuslaw National Forest. Open fires—including campfires, charcoal, pellet, and briquette fires—are banned outside designated campgrounds or recreation sites. Portable stoves and lanterns with on/off switches are still allowed. Fire officials cite hot, dry conditions and urge the public to help prevent human-caused wildfires. Smoking and generator use are limited, and off-road travel is restricted except in designated areas like Sand Lake and the Oregon Dunes. Conditions throughout the week are expected to continue to be warm and dry for the coast and inland. Check conditions before you go.
Planning Commission
The Florence Planning Commission will revisit several land use and code proposals at its next meeting. One item involves a conditional use permit and design review for converting an existing building at 1536 12th Street into a professional office within a high-density residential zone. Another request seeks a one-year extension for the next phases of the Fairway Estates subdivision. Commissioners will also consider proposed amendments to the city’s flood damage prevention code, aimed at protecting habitat and minimizing impacts in floodplain areas.
