Viking Football
The Siuslaw Vikings are gearing up for the 2025 football season with high hopes and a strong returning core. Head Coach Sam Johnson says replacing last year’s senior class—led by standouts like Max Reynolds and Joel Sissel—won’t be easy, but the returning talent is promising. Of the 22 starting positions, 17 are filled by returning players, thanks in part to midseason injuries that gave younger athletes valuable reps. The Vikings face a tough preseason against Marshfield, North Valley, Cascade Christian, and LaPine—before diving into a loaded league schedule.
“Anytime you lose a Max Reynolds and a Joel Sissel, I mean, that’s tough enough—but the nice thing for us is we return 17 starters, so I’m excited for the year.”
Siuslaw pre season begins September 5th on the road against Marshfield.
Flag Football
Flag football is officially coming back to Florence, thanks to a new partnership between Siuslaw Head Football Coach Sam Johnson and the Boys and Girls Club. Registration runs August 1st through September 5th, with a youth camp August 4th–8th and the season kicking off September 15th. The program gives 1st through 6th grade boys the chance to play locally instead of traveling to Eugene or Coos Bay. Cheerleading for 1st through 5th grade girls will run alongside the league.
Ems Extend Streak
The Eugene Emeralds edged out the Spokane Indians 5-4 for their ninth straight win—setting a new High-A era record and improving to 13-2 in the second half. Charlie Szykowny crushed his 10th homer of the season, while Jonah Cox added his league-leading 36th stolen base. Starter Josh Bostick was dominant, striking out a career-high 12 over seven shutout innings. Spokane rallied late, bringing the tying run to third in the 9th, but Cam Pferrer slammed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to seal the win. The Ems go for 10 in a row tonight.
