Fire Danger Increase
Fire danger on the Siuslaw National Forest has been raised from low to moderate as unusually hot and dry conditions continue across western Oregon. Officials say human-caused fires remain the top threat. Northwest Oregon Fire Management Staff Officer Kevin Reese says even a small spark could quickly become a wildfire, and prevention is critical. Visitors are urged to fully extinguish campfires, keep vehicles off dry grass, and properly dispose of cigarette butts. Fireworks are not allowed on public lands. There are no current campfire restrictions, but conditions can change quickly.
Gas Prices
Gas prices are easing slightly across Oregon and the nation as crude oil prices have fallen below $100 a barrel. AAA reports the national average for regular gas dropped 20 cents this week to $4.29 a gallon, while Oregon’s average fell 10 cents to $5.20. The decline comes amid hopes for reduced tensions involving Iran, although uncertainty in the Middle East continues to create volatility in oil markets. AAA’s Marie Dodds says drivers are getting a brief break, but prices remain more than a dollar higher than a year ago. In Florence, the average price for regular gasoline is also $5.20 per gallon.
Household Hazardous Waste Dropoff
Lane County is hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Roundup in Florence this weekend. The event runs Friday, June 5, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, June 6, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Florence Transfer Station on North Rhododendron. Community members can bring up to 35 gallons of household hazardous materials, including paint, cleaners, lawn chemicals, and fluorescent tubes. Officials say items labeled flammable, corrosive, or toxic are accepted, but not explosives, asbestos, or pressurized cylinders. Businesses can participate with pre-registration and a disposal fee. Electronics recycling is also available year-round at area transfer stations.
