Heat Advisory Until Tuesday PM

A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 11 p.m. Tuesday for inland areas including Mapleton and portions of the Coast Range. Forecasters say today will be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures expected to reach the upper 90s in the Mapleton area. Overnight lows will remain in the upper 50s to mid-60s, providing limited relief from the heat. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly neighbors, children, and pets. While Florence will remain much cooler, inland communities are expected to experience potentially dangerous heat.

City Council Meeting: System Development Charge

The Florence City Council will consider extending the city’s System Development Charge exemption and deferral program through June 2027. The program provides reduced SDC fees for smaller homes and allows builders to defer payments until final occupancy. Since its creation in 2018, the city has granted nearly $977,000 in exemptions. City staff say the issue is being reviewed as part of a broader financial resources analysis currently underway, with recommendations expected later this year. Councilors will hold a public hearing before considering the proposed ordinance at this evening’s City Council meeting at 5:30 at City Hall.

Men More Susceptible to Skin Cancer

A dermatologist at Oregon Health and Science University is encouraging men to take skin cancer risks seriously during Men’s Health Week. Research shows men are twice as likely as women to be diagnosed with melanoma by age 65. Dr. Anna Bar says men are often more exposed to the sun through outdoor work and may be less likely to use sunscreen. She recommends limiting sun exposure during peak hours, wearing protective clothing, and having any new or changing skin growths checked by a doctor. Early detection, she says, can make treatment much easier.

ATV Recovered From Highway

A local resident is hoping to reunite a lost ATV with its owner. James Ramsey says he discovered a Kawasaki 700 quad over the weekend near the intersection of Highways 101 and 126 after it apparently became separated from a trailer. Ramsey collected the vehicle for safekeeping and says he will return it to the rightful owner with proper identification. If you believe the ATV may belong to you, contact Coast Radio. We have contact information available for Mr. Ramsey and can help connect you with him.
