Crash Closes Eastbound 126
A head-on crash on Highway 126 near Tiernan shut down the eastbound lane for several hours Thursday afternoon. Witnesses told authorities a late-model SUV traveling westbound slowly crossed the centerline near milepost 7 and struck an RV heading east. The RV driver reportedly tried to avoid the collision but was unable to get out of the way. The SUV driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was later airlifted from Mapleton. No additional information on injuries has been released. Oregon State Police are investigating the crash. The eastbound lane remained closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene and conducted their investigation.
ODFW Summer Recreation
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says summer recreation opportunities are increasing along the central Oregon coast. Albacore tuna have arrived off Oregon waters, and anglers are being reminded to carry an ocean endorsement before heading offshore from ports serving Florence, Yachats and Reedsport. ODFW also reports expanded wild fall Chinook opportunities in several coastal basins and continued wild coho fisheries along much of the coast. Meanwhile, razor clam harvesting remains open through July 14, with closures taking effect July 15. Officials also encourage visitors to use caution around tide pools and never turn their back on the ocean.
MPOX Vaccine Advised for Some
Oregon health officials are urging people at higher risk for mpox exposure to get vaccinated as a more serious strain of the virus spreads in several countries around the world. Mpox is a viral disease that can cause fever, swollen lymph nodes and a rash or skin lesions. Health officials say it spreads primarily through close skin-to-skin contact, including intimate contact or caring for someone who is infected. As summer festivals, Pride celebrations and other large gatherings continue, people at increased risk are encouraged to get the JYNNEOS vaccine. Oregon has reported one mpox case so far this year, and health care providers are being asked to watch for symptoms and consider testing when appropriate.
