Oregon’s Drought
Oregon’s drought is expected to continue through summer and into fall, with experts warning that above-average temperatures are increasing wildfire risk and straining water supplies. National Integrated Drought Information System coordinator Jason Gerlich says dry conditions and a severe snow drought are compounding the problem. Nineteen of Oregon’s 36 counties remain under drought emergency declarations. The impacts are being felt locally as well. Rainfall totals in Florence are significantly lower than this time last year and moderately below the average of the past 7 years, with May recording less than 1.5 inches of rain. In Central Oregon, water shortages are forcing cutbacks for farmers and ranchers, while USDA officials say the nation’s beef cattle inventory has fallen to its lowest level in 75 years. Oregon’s WaterSMART program is offering grants to help improve irrigation efficiency.
Florence Woman Dies in Crash
A Florence woman died following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Rhododendron Drive. Florence Police say the crash happened around 3:44 p.m. July 7th at the intersection of Rhododendron Drive and North Jetty Road. Investigators say a Toyota RAV4 driven by Jane Connelley pulled onto Rhododendron Drive in front of a southbound Ford F350. The pickup struck the driver’s side of the SUV and was unable to avoid the collision. Connelley was found unconscious and transported to Peace Harbor Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police say speed does not appear to be a factor. Investigators are working with the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine whether a medical event may have contributed to the crash. Next of kin have been notified.
Rally Saturday
Florence Indivisible will host a Good Trouble Lives On rally Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the intersection of Highways 101 and 126 in Florence. Organizers say the event is part of a nationwide weekend of action inspired by the legacy of civil rights leader John Lewis, focusing on voting rights, civic participation, and democracy.
