Election Field Grows
The field continues to grow for Florence’s November municipal election, with multiple candidates now seeking the mayor’s office and City Council seats. Three candidates are in the mayor’s race: Shannon Warren, Sally Wantz, and Daniel Lofy. Council races are also taking shape, with Renee LoPilato, Mike Webb, Justin Ludwig, Jo Beaudreau, Terry Duman, Ryan Eichelberger, Elijah Yager, and Haylee Cole either qualified for the ballot or currently collecting signatures. With every council seat up for election, voters could reshape the entire makeup of the City Council. The mayor and council oversee city policies, the budget, and leadership of city government, with elections taking place during the November General Election. The City of Florence is encouraging prospective candidates to submit completed petitions by August 11 to allow time for signature verification ahead of the state’s final filing deadline.
Patton Veterans Project
A free film screening featuring four short documentaries created through the Patton Veterans Project will be held Monday, August 1st at City Lights Cinema. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. with the screening beginning at 1:00. Organizers say the films highlight the experiences, challenges, goals, and achievements of veterans from Oregon’s coastal communities and are intended to support advocacy and outreach efforts. Admission is free, and discounted concession prices will be available thanks to support from the Florence Elks. Community members are encouraged to attend and bring guests.
Gas Prices
Gas prices continue to climb across Oregon and much of the country. AAA reports the national average for regular gas is up 8 cents this week to $4.10 a gallon, while Oregon’s average has gained 7 cents to $4.64. Analysts say easing tensions in the Middle East have pushed crude oil prices lower, which could help slow further increases at the pump, but uncertainty over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz continues to keep markets on edge. In Florence, regular gasoline is averaging about $4.53 a gallon. AAA says prices will likely remain volatile as global oil markets react to events overseas.
