Poor Air Quality
The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency says wildfire smoke is expected to continue affecting Lane County through at least Thursday afternoon. Air quality this morning in Florence and Mapleton is starting out in the moderate range but is expected to worsen as the day progresses. LRAPA says air quality could range from Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups to Unhealthy, with the heaviest impacts expected in the Willamette Valley. Officials say a nightly inversion is trapping smoke near the ground overnight and into the morning hours, with some improvement possible each afternoon. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed when smoke levels are high, limit outdoor activity, and check the Air Quality Index before spending time outside. The National Weather Service also has a Heat Advisory in effect through late today for Mapleton. Forecasters say a weather change on Friday could bring cleaner air, but the timing remains uncertain.
Gas Prices
Pump prices remain fairly steady this week, despite sharp swings in crude oil prices tied to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. According to AAA Oregon/Idaho, the Oregon average for regular gas has edged up to $4.65 a gallon, while the national average slipped to $4.09. In Florence, drivers are paying an average of $4.59 for regular. AAA says crude oil has fluctuated between about $77 and $85 a barrel over the past week, and with oil prices remaining elevated, motorists could see the highest average August gas prices on record if volatility continues.
Daycare Opening
Enrollment opens in September for the new Elm Park Early Learning Center in Florence. The 5,000-square-foot facility features four classrooms, with two operated by Head Start of Lane County and two by Stepping Stones Center for Early Learning. The center is supported by Siuslaw Childcare Friends, which works to expand access to safe, reliable, and affordable childcare while supporting early educators through professional development incentives. According to organizers, financial assistance will also be available for qualifying families, including some residents of the Elm Park Apartments. Enrollment information is available through Head Start of Lane County and Stepping Stones Center for Early Learning.
