High School Sports
Siuslaw High School’s fall sports season gets underway today as student-athletes report for their first official practices. Cross country, football, boys and girls soccer, and volleyball all begin preparations for the upcoming season. Volleyball and soccer teams will open competition August 27th at jamborees in Coos Bay, while Viking football hosts Coquille in a nonleague opener August 28th. Cross country runners will also hold a fundraiser car wash Friday morning at Big Dog Donuts and Deli. Meanwhile, band, choir, and cheer programs are also gearing up for the new school year.
Ems Win Series
The Eugene Emeralds hold a half-game lead over Vancouver in the Northwest League after beating Hillsboro 5-3 Sunday. Eugene dropped the first two games of the series before winning four straight to improve to 27-20 in the second half. Cam Maldonado delivered the difference with a 2-run homer in the sixth. The Emeralds bullpen shut out Hillsboro the rest of the way, with Gerelmi Maldonado earning the save.
