Sheriff Says Scammers Impersonating Deputies
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about another round of phone scams. Callers are posing as sheriff’s office employees, often claiming to be sergeants, and telling victims they have warrants, missed jury duty or other legal issues. Scammers may threaten arrest and demand payment through cryptocurrency, phone apps or kiosks. The Sheriff’s Office says it will never ask for money by phone, text or email, and will not call about missed jury duty. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact Lane County Sheriff’s dispatch directly at 541-682-4150, option one.
Visitors Expected to Hit Coast
The Oregon Coast is expected to be a popular destination as travelers squeeze in one final getaway over the Labor Day weekend. AAA Oregon/Idaho lists the coast among its top regional destinations, as many families opt for shorter trips closer to home. Drivers should be prepared to pay more getting here. Oregon gas prices are averaging $4.77 a gallon, compared with $3.98 over Labor Day last year. While here in Florence the average is closer to $4.80. AAA also expects heavier traffic Thursday afternoon and Friday, with Saturday busy with day-trippers. Travelers are encouraged to leave early and avoid the middle of the afternoon when possible.
Free Grant Workshop
The Lane County Cultural Coalition is hosting a free grant workshop in Florence on September 9th from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Siuslaw Library. The session will cover 2027 Cultural Opportunity Grants of up to $2,500 for arts, heritage, and cultural projects. Applications are due October 15th. Details are available at laneculture.net.
Pancake Dinner
First Step Florence is hosting a Back to School Pancake Dinner fundraiser Friday, September 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church on Highway 101 in Florence. Dinner is $10 per plate or $25 for a family of four, with children under 4 eating free. Proceeds support unhoused families with children in the Florence area.
