New School Opens Today
Whitmore Classical Academy opens its doors to students today, marking the culmination of a four-year effort that began in 2022 when community members began developing plans for a public classical charter school in Florence. Since then, organizers have navigated the charter approval process, developed curriculum, hired staff and prepared a campus for opening day. Chief Operating Officer Jennifer Waggoner says seeing students arrive today is the realization of a long-held vision.
“We couldn’t be more excited. This journey started in 2022 with some really thoughtful people putting an idea together about a public charter school, a public classical charter school, and it’s coming to fruition today.”
Waggoner says the school’s opening reflects the work of board members, staff and volunteers who have spent months preparing for students and families.
“We’ve had volunteers pouring out their hearts for the last several weeks getting the building ready. We are ready. We’re excited for all the things we’re going to do for our students and their families and also our community.”
Whitmore Classical Academy opens this year with its initial grade levels and plans for future growth.
Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month, and Oregon leaders are raising concerns about growing food insecurity as cuts to federal food assistance programs continue to impact families across the state. Oregon Food Bank reports more than 70,000 Oregonians have lost SNAP benefits since major reductions to the program were implemented last year, contributing to a sharp increase in demand at food banks. State leaders say they are working to preserve programs such as School Meals for All and summer food assistance for children while looking for ways to support families facing higher food costs. In Florence, Food Share Executive Director Colin Morgan says the local need continues to grow.
“Like right now we’re serving over 100 unique folks a day, like unique individuals a day, represented by about 50 to 60 families. The need is high. I hate to sound like a broken record, but it’s higher than it’s ever been in our history. The town is growing and with it, need is growing.”
Food assistance advocates say rising costs for food, housing, and transportation continue to put pressure on households across Oregon, while food banks are working to meet increasing demand with fewer resources.
Vintage RV Trailer Rally
The 9th annual Goin’ with the Flo Vintage Trailer Rally and Community Open House returns to Florence on Saturday, September 26th. The free event runs from noon to 3 p.m. at Heceta Beach RV Park on Heceta Beach Road. Dozens of restored and vintage travel trailers will be open for public viewing, with classic cars and hot rods also on display. Organizer Terry Hankins says the event celebrates vintage camping, restoration, and the stories behind these classic trailers. Visitors can meet owners, learn about restoration projects, and enjoy a family-friendly afternoon.
