KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Billy Butler homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals outlasted the Seattle Mariners 8-7 last night. Butler hit a 1-1 pitch from Josh Kinney out to left center for his 18th homer. Mariners starter Kevin Millwood, who has not won since May 23, allowed seven runs and 10 hits, including a two-run homer to Lorenzo Cain, in five innings.

CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Miller Bolaños scored his first MLS goal to lift Chivas USA to a 1-0 victory over Portland yesterday. The goal came at an opportune time against an opponent nearly even in the Western Conference standings. Chivas now sits four points in front of Portland.

SEATTLE (AP) – Young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the first half, Chelsea newcomers Eden Hazard and Marko Marin scored deflected goals, and the champions of Europe opened their American tour with a 4-2 win over the Seattle Sounders last night. Seattle’s Fredy Montero scored a pair of goals in the first half, but the Sounders missed a number of good scoring chances early and had few offensive opportunities in the second half.

UNDATED (AP) – The Portland Trail Blazers have matched Minnesota’s four-year offer sheet worth more than $45 million for swingman Nicolas Batum. The Trail Blazers announced the decision yesterday, a few hours before the deadline. It brings to an end a long and occasionally bitter negotiation between the Blazers and Timberwolves.

UNDATED (AP) – Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch has been charged with driving under the influence by the Alameda County, Calif., district attorney’s office. Lynch has a court date on Aug. 14. Lynch was seen weaving on Interstate 880 in the Oakland, Calif., area on Saturday morning. A California Highway Patrol report described Lynch having two near collisions with two other vehicles.
