Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – Jason Vargas pitched seven solid innings and the Seattle Mariners sent Boston to its season-worst seventh loss in a row, beating the Red Sox 4-1 yesterday. The Red Sox fell to 0-7 on their road trip and have been outscored 58-16 in that span. Vargas allowed one run and six hits, walked no one and struck out five. He is the first Mariners pitcher other than Felix Hernandez to win at least 14 games since 2003. Tom Wilhelmsen worked the ninth to pick up his 23rd save in 26 opportunities.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks entered preparations for their regular season opener looking to fill a sudden void at tight end. The release of Kellen Winslow on Saturday leaves Seattle adapting to the loss of a proven pass catching option at a position where they struggled to find production in 2011. The Seahawks acquired Winslow in a trade with Tampa Bay in May, and he appeared set to become a big contributor. Seattle had used Winslow all over the field throughout training camp.

SEATTLE (AP) – Washington was already facing a difficult task with a game against No. 3 LSU. Now the Huskies will be doing it without a starting offensive lineman and a co-starting running back. Coach Steve Sarkisian said yesterday running back Jesse Callier will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in last Saturday’s opener against San Diego State. The Huskies will also be without starting right tackle Ben Riva, who fractured his forearm.
