Testimony on Trans Plan to Continue

The heavier than usual work load brought on by the draft Florence Transportation Systems plan will mean City Councilors will start work an hour earlier than usual again Monday evening.

Councilors will take testimony beginning at six pm at City Hall on the plan that will guide the management and implementation of transportation issues within the Urban Growth Boundary for the next 25-years.  There are several different components of the plan covering vehicles, bicycles, aircraft and pedestrians.  Included are also guidelines for rail, water and even pipelines; as well as public transit.  The T-S-P also includes policies and code revisions as part of the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The component of the plan that has drawn the most testimony as well as taken up most of councilor’s discussion is a capital project list and financing plan.  When elected officials began reviewing that list in June it included 72 different projects.  One or two of the projects have been stricken from the list but the remainder will ultimately be ranked in importance and feasibility.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce has put out a last minute call for volunteers to help out at this weekend’s Rods and Rhodies classic car show.  Chamber Executive Direct Cal Applebee says they still have a few openings… mainly ‘gate guards’ on both Saturday and Sunday.  Applebee says it’s a great way to get out and have some fun and watch the show while helping out.  He asks anyone interest to call the Chamber Visitor Center at 997-3128.

The annual call for volunteers at the Oregon Coast Aquarium has gone out as well.  The facility offers fall training classes for a variety of positions both in front and behind the scenes.  For those who are interested in learning more about marine life and the coastal environment they offer specialized training that includes a series of lectures and hands-on activities.  Interested parties can call Carrie Morgan, the volunteer coordinator at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Hey guys!   Hey guys!

Those are lines by Jeff Cohen as Chunk and former NFL lineman and character actor John Matuszak as Sloth Fratelli from the 1985 movie The Goonies about a group of kids in Astoria, Oregon who discover a treasure map and embark on a wild adventure.  The movie has developed a cult following over the years.  It will show tomorrow night at Miller Park in the third annual Drive In Movie Night presented by KCFM and the Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County.  The 15th street entrance to Miller park will open at 4:30 with live music and barbecue starting at 5:30… then screening begins at eight.
