ATHENA, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Transportation Department officials say a small airplane made a successful emergency landing Thursday afternoon on State Highway 11 in northeast Oregon. It touched down in Athena, about 17 miles east of Pendleton. Oregon State Police briefly closed the road so the plane could be moved off the main highway and closed it again for a short time to allow the plane to take off. KNDU-TV reports there was no immediate word on the reason for the emergency landing.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – The case of a 62-year-old Central Oregon man charged with murder in the December shooting death of his adult son has gone to the jury. Jurors in Bend considered the case for several hours yesterday and will resume deliberations today. KTVZ.com reports that Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty painted James Hargrave of Tumalo as a man who intentionally killed his 28-year-old son Steven. The defense told jurors that the elder Hargrave was a frail man who had suffered a stroke, was partially paralyzed and fired in self-defense in a confrontation with his drunken son.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police in Portland say they made an arrest within two hours after an armed robbery at a downtown Wells Fargo bank. The Oregonian reports that 32-year-old Steven W. Gentry was arrested about 5:30 p.m. yesterday. Another man and a woman were briefly detained with Gentry outside a southwest Portland apartment building but the other two were later released. Police were searching for a man suspected of robbing the bank at gunpoint at about 4 p.m. yesterday. No one was hurt.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – An elementary school has been closed in Southern Oregon after about half the 300 students and more than a dozen staff members fell sick with an unknown illness. Roseburg School District Superintendent Larry Parsons said that officials don’t know the cause of the ailment, but it does not appear to be related to anything anyone ate in the cafeteria. He says Fir Grove Elementary School will remain closed until Tuesday so the building can be sterilized.
