SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Four gun-control bills have hit a wall in the Oregon Legislature. Senate President Peter Courtney said yesterday the bills won’t get a vote on the Senate floor because there isn’t enough support for them to pass. Courtney says he’ll appoint a group of lawmakers to try to come up with a bipartisan compromise. He hasn’t said who exactly will work on that plan.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. John Kitzhaber has signed a bill cutting pension benefits for some retired government workers. Kitzhaber signed the bill without fanfare yesterday. He had previously called it a good first step, but he’s pushed for even steeper cuts to retirement benefits. Kitzhaber and legislators say the state must cut retirement costs in order to boost education funding.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) – An Oregon soldier based at Fort Bliss, Texas, is among five killed in the explosion of a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. An Army statement yesterday identified 24-year-old Spc. Brandon Joseph Prescott of Bend as one of those who died in the blast Saturday when an improvised explosive device struck their vehicle. He grew up in Dana Point, Calif.

LAPINE, Ore. (AP) – A Washington state man has a hefty speeding ticket to pay after getting clocked at 130 mph on his new Ducati motorcycle in central Oregon. Sixty-one-year-old Gregory Zaser is from the wealthy Lake Washington enclave of Medina, east of Seattle. The fine for going 130 mph in a 55 mph zone is $1,103 – the automatic penalty for going over 100 mph in Oregon.
