PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Police Chief Mike Reese was asked to cut down on department overtime and he’s doing something about it. The chief is leaving his 15th floor office at the Justice Center office to fill vacant shifts. The Oregonian reports he assigned himself three patrol shifts this week in downtown Portland. The shifts were vacant because officers have been sent for additional training.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a man accused of stabbing a woman at a northeast Portland apartment is the estranged husband of the woman’s roommate. Police say the man went to the apartment yesterday afternoon and assaulted his wife and then stabbed the roommate when she intervened. The victim was taken to a Portland hospital and is expected to recover. The man fled but was later located and arrested.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The Jackson County sheriff’s office says an inmate in the county jail hanged himself. Jail staff found 19-year-old Kyle Louis Mellon on Monday, and attempts to revive him failed. Capt. Monty Holloway says there was no indication Mellon was suicidal. He had been jailed for investigation of a convenience store armed robbery.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – State officials are looking for alternatives after voters in two Oregon timber counties turned down tax increases to fund law enforcement. The outcome puts Curry County closer to going broke and a potential state takeover. Josephine County is looking at further law enforcement cuts. Voters in a third timber county, Lane, approved a jail levy.
