PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man who pleaded no contest has been sentenced to seven years in prison for crashing his pickup into a woman celebrating a friend’s 21st birthday in the Portland night-spot district named Old Town. The Oregonian reports that 20-year-old Rebecca Bray of Gresham was standing on a sidewalk waiting for a designated driver when she was hit and killed. Prosecutors say 42-year-old Brent Warstler was doing 42 mph in a 20-mph zone and had a blood alcohol level of .20 percent.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge has delayed the sentencing of Mohamed Mohamud until a week before Christmas. The young Somali-American was convicted in January of plotting to bomb a 2010 Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland’s town square. He was originally scheduled to be sentenced in June, but federal prosecutors asked for a delay because they needed more time to prepare sentencing recommendations.

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) – Coos County commissioners have approved a plan to spray mosquitoes coming off a national wildlife refuge and surrounding areas because the insects have been tormenting residents and visitors to the Bandon, Ore., area. The World newspaper reported that commissioners approved the plan yesterday, despite concerns raised that one of the pesticides to be used could harm crustaceans in nearby creeks.

NEW YORK (AP) – News Corp., the owner of The Wall Street Journal, is trimming its newspaper portfolio by selling 33 smaller publications, including eight dailies. Fortress Investment Group LLC is buying the papers for an undisclosed amount. They include The Mail Tribune in Medford, Ore. and The Daily Tidings in Ashland, Ore.
