Noted Attorney Passes Away; Gas Prices Steady; LOL for Christmas

18 December 2013

Home Safety for the Holidays

Our homes can be hazardous enough for young children, but throw in a mixture of holiday decorations, candy and the excitement of the season and the danger level can rise.

But it doesn’t have to according to Western Lane Ambulance Paramedic Al Kreitz.

He says parents and grandparents can take some simple steps to prevent choking and accidental poisoning.

Many floral decorations can be poisonous; needles on Christmas Trees can pose a risk to young eyes and small ornaments or even hard candies can be choking hazards.

Look around your home from a two-year old’s perspective.  Are the hard candies within reach?  Is that tinsel hanging low where a toddler could grab a mouthful?

Kreitz said its ever more important this time of year to know basic first aid and have a knowledge of CPR and anti-choking maneuvers.

One last hazard to be aware of, especially if you’re entertaining, is that eggnog laced with brandy or a ‘hard punch’… they can be very tasty to a young palate, but could lead to alcohol poisoning.

Noted Attorney Passes

A Portland attorney with a national reputation and local ties has passed away.  Kelly Clark was 56-years old and died this week of cancer-related causes at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

He’s best known for winning a landmark court decision forcing the Boys Scouts of America to release its “perversion files” on suspected child molesters in the organization.  He also represented several different victims of child molestation in suits against the Catholic Church.

Clark was active in the early stages of a case against the State of Oregon challenging the legality of the agreement that paved the way for construction of Three Rivers Casino.

Gas Prices Steady

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is down four cents in the past week.  It’s now at $3.22.  That’s seven cents below the Oregon average as measured by Triple-A and seven cents above the local price.

Drivers in Florence are paying, on average, $3.15 a gallon for the second week in a row.  That is just pennies less than they were paying a year ago… but 73-cents a gallon on average less than six months ago.

LOL for Christmas

For the past two years Three Rivers Casino has been presenting a weekly comedy night.  Next week that will coincide with Christmas Day and rather than cancel for the evening, the team that presents entertainment opted to come up with something special.

The dark mysteries of the mind may not seem like a subject for a comedy show, but under the guidance of noted hypnotist Gabriel Holmes it can be the perfect combination.

The Portland hypnotist will bring his high energy act to L-O-L Wednesday at Three Rivers one week from today.

L-O-L Wednesday is an ongoing comedy review and has brought nationally known performers to Florence.  Reservations are not required and there is no cost for the show.
