PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Superintendent Carole Smith criticized a group of parents for their complaints about an African-American principal and recommended diversity training for them. The Oregonian reports Smith is backing Metropolitan Learning Center Principal Macarre Traynham in the conflict with parents at the school.

SANDY, Ore. (AP) – Demonstrators stomped around in a kiddie pool full of mud to protest a timber sale in the Mount Hood National Forest. At the rally yesterday ooutside forest headquarters in Sandy, demonstrators said logging would result in mud washing into the Collawash River, critical salmon habitat. A national forest spokeswoman told KGW that a review of the logging project found the river would not be hurt.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) – Parents and students at Ridgewood Elementary School in Beaverton are on alert after two cougar sightings yesterday near the school. A Fish and Wildlife spokesman told KPTV officers will search the woods near the school and set a trap if they find evidence of a cougar.

HARRISBURG, Ore. (AP) – The Harrisburg fire chief says the blaze that heavily damaged a feed mill and warehouse was likely caused by spontaneous combustion. Chief John Goucher estimates damage from yesterday’s fire at Smucker Pelleting and RS Feed at $1 million to $2 million.
